Additional Information

About the artwork
This was one of Bomberg’s last paintings. According to Lilian Holt, the model was ‘a very old Gypsy, named Eduarda, elegant, refined, and very dignified, somewhat remote, with gaunt, weather beaten features, and a kind of masculinity, yet very gentle. She had traversed the mountains on foot, most of her life, selling her wares from village to village, and David's painting of her came out this way’.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

David Bomberg (1890–1957) was a British artist, described as the most audacious painter of his generation at the Slade. His treatment of the human figure, in terms of angular, clear-cut forms charged with enormous energy, revealed his determination to bring about a drastic renewal in British painting. Born in Birmingham and raised in Whiitechapel, London, Bomberg initially trained as a lithographer before studying at Westminster School of Art under Walter Sickert. Although he was loosely associated with the Camden Town Group, the vorticist movement and The London Group, he remained consciously indepentent of formal ties with groups or movements. Although his work was not commercially successful in his lifetime after WWI, appreciation of his work has grown in the years since his death, with a major retrospective held at Tate in 1988.
