Additional Information

About the artwork
Duncan Grant painted this piece in response to the theme ‘London on Holiday’. Inspired by summers at the Serpentine in London’s Hyde Park, Grant incorporated his knowledge of Michelangelo’s male nudes to create a panorama of seven men swimming and boating. Although it was considered controversial at the time of painting for its homoerotic suggestiveness, one critic for The Times reported that Grant had ‘used all his remarkable powers of draughtsmanship’ to capture the physical act of swimming. It was created for display in the dining room at Borough Polytechnic, London, 1911.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Duncan James Corrowr Grant (1885 – 1978) was a British artist and designer. Encouraged by the French painter Simon Bussy, Grant studied at the Westminster School of Art, La Palette, Paris, and the Slade School of Art, London. As an artist he worked mainly in paint, and his design work saw him design textiles, pottery, theatre sets and costumes. He was a member of the Camden Town Group of artists and also the Bloomsbury Group of writers, philosophers and artists. Although he remained actively homosexual, Grant maintained a close relationship with fellow artist Vanessa Bell until her death in 1961, and together they had one child, Angelica Vanessa Bell. Tate has held two retrospectives of his work, one in 1959, and one in 1975 in honour of his 90th birthday.
