Additional Information

About the artwork
This self-portrait of Gwen John was said to be an excellent representation of her. It was probably painted some time soon after she left the Slade School of Art, where she trained between 1895–1898. A serious expression on her face, John paints herself in a bright red, tartan-like shirt, with a black shawl covering one arm and a cameo pinned at her throat. Because of the pose and composition John used in this image, it has been suggested that she may have painted it as a reflection of her isolated position as a woman artist in a male-dominated industry.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gwen John (1876 – 1939) was a British artist, who is best known for her intimate portraits and studies of women, children, and animals. Although at points in her career she was influenced by the Old Masters and Whistler, her style remained aloof from art movements and was intensely personal. In her lifetime, she was overshadowed by her vivacious painter brother Augustus John. Perhaps because of this, for most of her adult life she lived in France, where she developed a passionate attachment to the sculptor Rodin. Gwen John died in 1939 in Dieppe, leaving France at the outbreak of the Second World War.
