About the artwork
This painting is a self-portrait by Louise Jopling. Dressed in a blue dress with a matching blue and white cap, Jopling paints her reflection in a mirror. We can see the mirror’s black frame and glimpse the room beyond it as well as the detailed reflection of Jopling in the act of painting, seated in front of a decorative folding screen. Her expressive brushstrokes are visible on her gown, and she holds a palette with all the colours she needs to paint this very scene. Jopling painted this portrait in 1875, so it is possible that the title is a nod to Lewis Carroll’s novel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There, 1871. The mirror itself looks like the one also used in Jopling’s 1875 painting, A Modern Cinderella.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Louise Jane Jopling (1843 – 1933) was a British painter, and one of the most prominent Victorian female artists. Born in Manchester, Jopling married at age 17. Encouraged by the Baroness de Rothschild, she studied art and exhibited in Paris in the 1860s, and at the Royal Academy from 1870–73. When her first husband died, she married Vanity Fair artist Joseph Middleton Jopling in 1874, and they belonged to a literary and artistic social circle that included John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Oscar Wilde and Ellen Terry. Jopling’s success in painting meant that she took on the role of the main earner in her marriage, and she exhibited her work internationally. In 1880 she joined the Society of Women Artists, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1891, and in 1901 she became the one of the first women to be admitted to the Royal Society of British Artists. After her second husband’s death in 1884, she remarried once more but retained the name Jopling for her professional work. A champion of women’s rights in art and society, she opened her own school of painting for women in 1887. She was also an active supporter of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies, and the vice president of the Healthy and Artistic Dress Union, which promoted practical dress reform. She died in Chesham Bois, aged 90.
