Additional Information

Anthony McCall has generously produced Face to Face, 2024, a limited edition artwork on the occasion of the exhibition, Solid Light, Tate Modern, 27 June 2024 – 27 April 2025.

McCall’s limited edition for Tate shares a title with one of his innovative light installations. For his installations, beams of light are projected through a thin mist, creating large sculptural forms in space, which slowly shift and change. The limited edition captures a view from inside the translucent sculptures of light. Printed with high-density pigment ink, Face to Face, 2024, showcases a cinematic composition of light and shadow.

Each artwork is signed and numbered on the front. Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.

Anthony McCall (b. St Paul’s Cray, UK, 1946) is known for his large-scale, immersive installations of light which occupy a space between sculpture, cinema, drawing, and performance. In 1973, shortly after he moved from London to New York, McCall began developing ideas for a film in which spectators would face the projector and focus on the beam of light instead of the screen. He tested the idea by covering his studio window with black paper and piercing it with a single narrow slit. A flat blade of light was projected into the room by the sun, made perfectly visible by ambient dust and cigarette smoke. His seminal light installation work, Line Describing a Cone, 1973, redefined the possibilities of sculpture.

The historical importance of McCall’s work has been internationally recognised in such exhibitions as Dark Rooms, Solid Light, at the Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo, New York (2019); Anthony McCall: Solid Light Works, at Pioneer Works, Brooklyn, New York (2018); Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905-2016 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2016); On Line at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010-11), The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality and the Projected Image at the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC (2008); and The Geometry of Motion 1920s/1970s at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2008).

His work can be found in collections across the world, including Centre Pompidou, Paris; Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; Guggenheim Museum, New York; Hirshhorn Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona; Tate, London, and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.
