Bob and Roberta Smith Make Art Not War Giclee print

Say it loud, say it large: this large Giclee print of Bob and Roberta Smith’s Make Art Not War, 1997 is the very definition of a statement piece.

Painted on two plywood panels Smith found in a skip, using signwriting and Dulux household paint, Smith made Make Art Not War in London in 1997. Smith said that his father is the source of the work’s slogan - ‘on his death bed he said to me, “Make art, not war. Don’t hate, draw”’.

Measuring 90 x 85 cm (including a slim white border), the artwork image is Giclee printed with UV inks on a Nyala4 grand format UV printer from SwissQ. This state-of-the-art press uses eight colour channels, with the key benefits being an exceptionally wide colour gamut, and the latest print head technology, capable of 1350dpi resolution, ensuring unprecedented reproduction quality.

The paper used for the print is Monte Carlo 300gsm watercolour paper. This premium paper is made on a traditional cylinder mould machine at St Cuthbert's Mill in Somerset, where fine art papers have been made since the 1700s.

About the artist

Bob and Roberta Smith is the pseudonym of British contemporary artist, author and musician Patrick Brill (born 1963). An outspoken art education advocate, the idea that political campaigns are actually extended art works is central to his work, and he is best known for his slogan art in the form of painted signs. For Bob, art is ‘an important element in democratic life.’
