De Stijl Tumbling Tower game

An artful take on a classic game, the De Stijl Tumbling Tower game blends art movement aesthetics with a 3D dexterity puzzle challenge.

Designed by Monica Albornoz as part of MoMA's collaboration with the MFA Products of Design program at the School of Visual Arts, the tumbling blocks game is like an interactive Mondrian painting. Using the black, white, blue, red and yellow coloured rectangular blocks, players aged 5 and up take turns to remove a block from the tower and place it on the top. Part game, part sculpture, the ‘composition’ of the tower evolves with the gaps created and the position of the blocks on top, until the tower topples.

A game for the whole family, the tumbling tower blocks can also be used to create mindful arrangements outside of the game. Removing the competitive element, you can use the blocks to explore De Stijl principles, making a purely abstract visual composition out of the blocks which you could then use as a reference for your own paintings, or to simply enjoy as a 3D art piece.

Each painted block is made from sustainably sourced and harvested rubberwood, and the assembled game measures 30.48 x 7.62 x 7.62 cm.
