About the artist

Grace Winifred Pailthorpe (1883 – 1971) was a British surrealist artist, surgeon, and psychologist. Born in Sussex, Pailthorpe began studying at the Royal College of Music in 1908 but left to study medicine at Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. She travelled the world working as a surgeon until 1922, when she returned to Britain and began a career in psychological research, first focusing on criminal psychology, and later, with her husband Reuben Mednikoff, the psychology of art. Whilst living in Cornwall, they began creating their own Surrealist artworks, and in 1936 Pailthorpe contributed to the International Surrealist Exhibition held in London. She believed that surrealism and psychoanalysis were both means to personal liberation and the development of artistic creativity and freedom of expression.
