Additional Information

Poster of Code of Ethics For Art Museums Monument, 2019 by Guerrilla Girls.

The poster shows a monument, stood in the David H Koch Plaza at MoMA, New York. With an eternal flame burning at the top, and images of gorilla masks all down the side, the fantasy monument has commandments etched on the front as follows:

If thou exhibiteth SUPER EXPENSIVE art bought at SUPER FANCY galleries and donated by SUPER RICH collectors for SUPER BIG tax deductions, thou must renameth thyself the MUSEUM OF SUPER RICH PEOPLE'S ART
Thou shalt honor all thine employees, never undermine their efforts to unionize, and pay them a living wage plus benefits
Thou shalt cast out institutional racism, sexism, classism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia and colonialism, too
Thou shalt banish board members who make the world a worse place: OUT with money launderers, arms dealers, inside traders, climate change deniers, polluters, antiquities smugglers, addictive drug manufacturers, student loan sharks and associates of Jeffrey Epstein
If thou dost not show art and hire staff as diverse as the culture thou claimeth to represent, admit thou are not preserving the HISTORY OF ART, only the HISTORY OF WEALTH AND POWER

In 60 x 40 cm format, ideal for posting your agreement with these principles on your wall or in your window. The poster is part of our Guerrilla Girls Tate Edit takeover, a celebration of art and activism curated by the masked artists themselves. Formed in New York City in 1985, Guerrilla Girls strive to ‘fight discrimination through humour, activism, and the arts’, highlighting sexism, racism and elitism in the art world. They conceal their identities, often with gorilla masks, and use pseudonyms. They continue to produce publicity exposing discrimination, as well as conducting seminars and workshops in schools, colleges and art institutions.
