Additional Information

Poster of Do Women Have To Be Naked To Get Into the Met. Museum?, 1989, by Guerrilla Girls.

One of Guerrilla Girls’ most famous pieces, the design was created as part of a billboard design commission by the Public Art Fund in New York. Guerrilla Girls visited the Met museum and gathered data on the number of artworks by women versus the number that contained female nudes, and put the percentages on their poster design. When the billboard design was rejected by the Public Art Fund, the artists rented advertising space on NYC buses and displayed it there instead.

The image used a detail from La Grande Odalisque, 1814 Jean-Auguste-Dominique, with a gorilla mask covering the sitter’s face. The text on the poster reads:

Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?
Less that 5% of the artists in the Modern Art sections are women, but 85% of the nudes are female
Statistics from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, 1989.
GUERRILLA GIRLS CONSCIENCE OF THE ART WORLD

The image was later made into screenprinted posters and used as part of the portfolio Guerrilla Girls Talk Back. This reproduction poster, printed on FSC certified paper, is sized to almost match the original screenprinted version, measuring 30 x 70 cm.

The poster is part of our Guerrilla Girls Tate Edit takeover, a celebration of art and activism curated by the masked artists themselves. Formed in New York City in 1985, Guerrilla Girls strive to ‘fight discrimination through humour, activism, and the arts’, highlighting sexism, racism and elitism in the art world. They conceal their identities, often with gorilla masks, and use pseudonyms. They continue to produce publicity exposing discrimination, as well as conducting seminars and workshops in schools, colleges and art institutions.
