Howard Hodgkin Red Sky in the Morning rug

Handmade rug with a design taken from Howard Hodgkin’s Red Sky in the Morning, 2016. Created by artisan rugmakers Christopher Farr, the limited edition rug is made in close collaboration with the artist’s estate to ensure a faithful representation of the original work in hand-tufted wool.

Hodgkin’s original abstract painting was an oil on wood piece, in red, cream and blue with areas of the wood visible at the edges of the artwork. The rug elegantly reproduces these hues and the artist’s brushstrokes using handspun Ghazni wool, with just 150 rugs created.

About the artist

Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017) was an English painter, printmaker and collector. His use of large, vibrant strokes of bright colours in is work has led to him often being associated with Pop Art. Hodgkin used painting to capture emotions and events from his past. His paintings are generally small in scale as he chose to use the traditional European method of easel painting. In the 1970s Hodgkin’s work shifted to a more complex use of patterning. He used these new techniques to create a variety of moods.
