The White Horse, 2007/2024
Additional Information
Wallinger’s limited edition for Tate presents his winning proposal for the Ebbsfleet Landmark Project for Kent, which was awarded in 2009 and nicknamed the ‘Angel of the South’. In his proposal, a vast white stallion, twenty-five times life-size, stands in the landscape of the Thames Estuary in Swanscombe, part of the out-of-town commuter belt. Wallinger says: ‘The site is where the chalk of the North Downs goes into the Thames… I was thinking throughfares, Watling Street, pilgrims, all the immigrants and travellers who had come and gone to London.’ Historically, the Ebbsfleet area is where Hengist and Horsa, the Saxon invaders, landed and entered the UK. The white horse was adopted as a symbol of Kent after the emblem of Horsa. Wallinger’s horse is a thoroughbred wearing a head collar and is posed in a style which is traditional for racing catalogues and stud books. This pose can be seen in many of Stubbs’ paintings.
