Philip Guston Legend poster

Philip Guston’s Legend, 1977, in 50 x 70 poster form to celebrate the arrival of the Philip Guston exhibition at Tate Modern.

Legend shows a sleeping figure with a furrowed brow, sleeping on a cloud-shaped pillow, and surrounded by a cluster of objects including cans, the rear end of a horse, a hand brandishing a club, bottles, nails, bricks and shoes. An open book lies on the duvet covering the sleeper.

About the artist

Philip Guston (1913 – 1980) was a Canadian American artist, who worked in painting, drawing, printmaking and murals. The son of Jewish immigrants who had escaped persecution in what is now Ukraine, Guston was raised in the United States. Along with Jackson Pollack, Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning, Guston’s abstract works in the 1950s and 60s made him one of the most celebrated American abstract painters of the time. During the social and political upheavals of the late 1960s, Guston rejected abstraction, and instead developed a practice involving large-scale paintings and comic-like figures, some in white hoods representing evil and the everyday perpetrators of racism.
