Additional Information
Created in collaboration with the estate of the artist, the large silk scarf is one of two ‘flag scarves’ celebrating the artist’s work.
The silk scarf pays homage to flag-based artworks Rose Finn-Kelsey made in the 1970s, such as Here is a Gale Warning, 1971 and Power for the People, 1972. At 90 x 60 cm, the silk scarf is both a highly wearable fashion garment, or a beautiful piece of fabric art suitable for framing or hanging. Antoni & Alison describe the scarves as being ‘made as souvenirs of Rose’s work’.
The Sad and Lonely scarf is based on a Finn-Kelcey sculpture in Tate’s collection, Sad and Lonely (Set meal for one), 2006, where text from a Chinese takeaway menu has been blown up to the scale of a fairground sign. Antoni & Alison’s design for the scarf is a wheel of fortune offering four ways to win:
Popular + Sad
Happy + Popular
Sad + Lonely
Lonely + Happy
They explain, ‘We had made a set of happy work…we had made a set of miserable work…we had made a set of opposite work - Happy & Sad, Clever & Stupid, Interesting & Dull…so when we read Sad and Lonely we understood’.
The large silk scarf is presented in a gift box, also designed by Antoni & Alison. The label on the box (A Vacated Performance) notes the absence of all three artists, and relates to a series of Vacated Performances Finn-Kelcey made in the 1980s. The designers note that ‘we are sad Rose isn’t here to see our response and the response and attention of others to her work’, and the label proposes that it is the wearer who now completes their performance.
Antoni & Alison is the fashion label of Antoni Burakowski (b.1962) and Alison Roberts (b.1963), launched in 1987 after they met at St Martin's School of Art. A distinctive voice in British fashion, they’ve retained creative control over almost every aspect of their label, including curating and running their own shop in Farringdon. Working with the estate of Rose Finn-Kelcey, they felt an affinity with aspects of her work, particularly their mutual interest in speech and the ambiguities of language.
