Additional Information

Sarah Lucas has generously produced Curious Orange, 2023, a limited edition artwork on the occasion of the exhibition, Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas, at Tate Britain, 28 September 2023 – 14 January 2024.

Printed on Cialinen Beige canvas, Curious Orange, 2023, portrays a sculpture from Lucas’s long-term Bunny series which she first conceived in 1997 as an installation titled Bunny Gets Snookered. Eight ‘bunny girl’ sculptures made from pairs of tights stuffed with cotton wadding in figure-chair compositions were positioned around a snooker table, challenging gender stereotypes through a play on conventions of representation and framing. In Curious Orange, 2023, high-heeled shoes and orange stockings are positioned on limp and uninterested limbs. The sagging body, slouched across a bar stool with pointed breasts looking outwards with curiosity, provides a comic antithesis to her ‘bunny girl’ namesake and playfully critiques sexualised representation of the female form.

Each print is signed and numbered by the artist and comes unframed. Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.

Sarah Lucas (b. 1962, London, UK) is internationally celebrated for her bold and provocative use of materials and imagery. Using ordinary objects in unexpected ways, she has consistently challenged our understanding of sex, class and gender. Lucas studied at Working Men’s College (1982-83), London College of Printing (1983-84) and Goldsmiths College (1984-87) where she exhibited in the now historic Freeze exhibition in London’s Docklands in 1988, often described as the starting point of the YBAs. Over the course of three decades, Lucas has become recognised as one of Britain’s most significant contemporary artists. Spanning sculpture, photography and installation, her work has consistently been characterised by irreverent humour and the use of everyday ‘readymade' objects – furniture, food, tabloid newspapers, tights, toilets, cigarettes – to conjure up corporeal fragments. The body – in its many guises – is Lucas’s prevailing subject.

Recent solo exhibitions include Dream Fourteen, Paul Stolper, London, UK (2021); SEX LIFE, The Perimeter, London, UK (2021); Project 1 and NGA National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, Australia (2021); HONEY PIE, Sadie Coles HQ, Kingly Street, London, UK (2020). Recent group exhibitions include, Vicolo della Penitenza 11/A, MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome, Rome, Italy (2023); BUTTERFLY!; ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj, Denmark (2023); BIG WOMEN, curated by Sarah Lucas, Firstsite, Colchester, UK (2023): Breaking the Mould: Sculpture by Women since 1945, New Art Gallery Walsall, Walsall, UK (2022). Major exhibitions in the last decade have included Sarah Lucas: POWER IN WOMAN, Sir John Soane’s Museum, London, UK (2016); I SCREAM DADDIO, British Pavilion, 56th Venice International Art Biennale, Venice, Italy (2015); Florian and Kevin, Aspen Art Museum, Aspen CO, USA (2014); NOB + Gelatin, Secession, Vienna, Austria (2013); and SITUATION Absolute Beach Man Rubble, Whitechapel Gallery, London, UK (2013). Lucas’ work is in public collections around the world including Art Museum University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada; Arts Council Collection, London, UK; Centre Pompidou, Paris, France; Fukuoka Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan; Guggenheim Museum, New York NY, USA; and Tate, London, UK. She lives and works in Suffolk, UK.
