Additional Information
Huang’s limited edition for Tate draws from an ongoing interest in what, how and where people consume food, exploring the cultural and environmental impact of cycles of production and commerce. Huang is particularly interested in the cacophony of sounds, sights and textures at food markets, where voices in different languages and music on different radio stations overlap, and objects of all kinds are being used to create temporary structures. Through assemblage, Huang explores relationships between the objects found in these environments.
For the limited edition, a pair of cherries made from delicate glass sit in front of an analogue photograph in a bespoke cherry wood box with mouth-blown, violet-tinted glazing. Beautifully crafted by hand in high quality materials, the objects are transformed from temporary to permanent. Their arrangement goes from incidental to purposeful, inviting a thoughtful encounter.
Due to the methods of producing blown glass, please expect variations in the shape of the cherries and the finish of the glazing. Oval bubbles in the glazing are normal. Each artwork is accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate. Prices of the artwork are liable to change. As a limited edition sells out, prices of the artwork are subject to increase and the price will be clearly indicated.
About the artist
Steph Huang (b. 1990, Changhua, Taiwan) uses techniques such as glass blowing, casting, film and sound. Inspired by her investigations into mass production and the history of the food industry, Huang creates poetic installations which question the effects that consumer culture has on our environment.
Poetically charged, Huang’s work expresses autobiographical narratives through a process of layered storytelling. Rooted in the close observation of incidental details, the relationships objects have with each other, as well as the eccentric moments in everyday life, her work attempts to examine something of the lives of modern human beings through mass-produced objects.
She received her MA in Sculpture from Royal College of Art in 2021. Recent solo exhibitions include There Is Nothing Old Under The Sun, Standpoint London, UK, 2024; The Water that Bears the Boat, E-WERK Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany, 2024; I will see you when the week ends, Public Gallery, London, UK, 2023; Taipei Art Awards, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei, Taiwan, 2022; Deep Shallow, Volt, Eastbourne, UK, 2022; A Great Increase In Business Is On Its Way, Goldsmiths CCA, London, UK, 2022.
In 2023, Huang was awarded the Mark Tanner Sculpture Award and was a recipient of The Henry Moore Foundation Artist Award. In 2022, Huang was awarded the Grand Prize at the Taipei Art Awards. She lives and works in London, UK.
