Leonie Branston of Ferian designed the Tate bracelet with a chamfered opening to reflect the famous slope of Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, a thoughtful detail on an understated piece. As with the other pieces in our Ferian for Tate collection, the bespoke hallmarks of the piece form a key part of its design, stamped by the London Assay Office across the face of the bangle.
The shape of the bracelet follows in the tradition of Torc bracelets, which have been worn since the Bronze age, during which time they’ve evolved from ornate symbols of bravery and nobility to a classic of understated jewellery. Sterling silver has natural flexibility, so the opening can be gently stretched or squeezed to suit the wearer’s wrist, making it ideal for both men and women. With no need for a fastening, simply slide the wrist in sideways to wear.
Made in London, the bracelet is formed using the ancient technique of lost wax casting. The original artefact is cast in wax and its form replaced by molten sterling silver. After cooling, the piece is hand polished by one master craftsperson. Carefully positioned to suit the scale of the bangle, the bespoke hallmarks have the dual function of decoration and traceability, authenticating maker, year, and metal fineness. The hallmarks are engraved at the historic London Assay office in Hatton Garden, who have guaranteed provenance and precious metals for over 700 years. This means that the bracelet is entirely made, from conception to hallmarking, within five miles of Tate Modern.
Ferian was founded by designer Leonie Branston in 2017, and is operated from her North London garden studio and nearby workshop. Using an old English word that means to carry over water, Ferian jewellery is made by combining carefully chosen natural materials that remain timeless and grow more desirable as their character is expressed by generations of discerning ownership. The silver used for our Ferian for Tate collection is made from 80% recycled sources, and properly cared for, will last for several lifetimes.
Remove your jewellery when cleaning, bathing, sleeping and swimming. We recommend storing your jewellery in a box. Silver naturally oxidises adding character to your jewellery, however a gentle buff with silver polish and a soft cloth will restore the shine. Avoid collision with hard surfaces as this may cause dents and scratches.
